Injuries, bans and polls hit Romania

BUCHAREST, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Beset by injuries and bans and with their coach caught up in a feverish parliamentary electoral race, Romania have delayed naming their squad for next week's World Cup European Group One qualifier against Armenia.
About 12 key players will miss the match on November 17 and national team coach Anghel Iordanescu is running for a parliamentary seat with the ruling Social Democrat party in the November 28 general election.
'The Romania national team's staff is not able to offer a squad for the moment,' a Romanian FA (FRF) official said on Thursday. It will now be released on Friday after an emergency FRF board meeting.
FRF spokesman Paul Zaharia said the latest setback had come from Italy where skipper Cristian Chivu of AS Roma has had to undergo surgery for a toe injury.
Steaua Bucharest defender Mirel Radoi and team mate midfielder Florentin Dumitru both have knee injuries and will miss the match along with several other players, including Adrian Mutu, who are either injured or suspended.
Local media have slammed Iordanescu for taking up politics, saying his focus should be on the game in Yerevan.
'Iordanescu has forgotten about soccer tactics and he's now offering demagogic speeches,' influent daily Evenimentul Zilei headlined its sport page. 'Instead of preparing for the match against Armenia, Iordanescu is making electoral promises.'
