With the clock ticking and options dwindling for playing a truncated schedule to save the N.H.L. season, new bargaining between the league and the players association is expected to open Monday in New York.
The two sides talked on a conference call Saturday and in person Sunday to clarify the N.H.L.’s offer for a new collective bargaining agreement, contained in a nearly 300-page document sent to the union on Thursday. Sunday’s face-to-face session at the N.H.L. office in Midtown was the first formal meeting between the two sides since negotiations broke off Dec. 13.
The weekend talks did not involve player representatives or owners. Later Sunday, the union held internal meetings and was believed to be preparing a counteroffer.
“There will be no further face-to-face meetings today,” Jonathan Weatherdon, a union spokesman, said in an e-mail message sent Sunday afternoon, the 106th day of the lockout. “The plan is for the sides to meet tomorrow.”
A key point of contention could be the response from Donald Fehr, the union’s executive director, on the N.H.L.’s proposed reduction of the salary cap from $70.2 million a team for the remainder of the current season to $60 million for 2013-14.
The league is seeking a settlement within two weeks so that the season would start on or near Jan. 19. That date would allow for a 48-game season, the same length as the lockout-truncated 1994-95 season.
Similar to that season, there will be no interconference games: Eastern teams will play only Eastern opponents, and Western teams only Western opponents. Travel might be further lightened by having Winnipeg move to the West and Columbus to the East.
However, options for a slightly shorter season are also possible if a settlement is not reached until after two weeks.
During a Dec. 6 news conference, Commissioner Gary Bettman suggested that a 48-game schedule would be the minimum acceptable length for a season. But a close read of what he actually said showed that he left wiggle room for a schedule of a different length.
Bettman was asked if he had decided on a minimum number of games.
“No,” he answered. “If you go back in history, in ’94-95, I think we played 48 games. I can’t imagine wanting to play fewer than that.”
The 48-game schedule in 1995 was played when the N.H.L. had just 26 teams — 14 in the East and 12 in the West. The Rangers played four games apiece against nine of their Eastern opponents, and three games apiece against Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Quebec and Hartford.
Western teams played four games against each of seven opponents, and five games against each of four others.
A 48-game schedule in 2013 would be played in a 30-team N.H.L., with 15 teams in each conference.
There are two probable ways that Steve Hatze Petros, the league’s vice president for scheduling, could set up a 48-game schedule for a team. For example, the Rangers could play eight opponents three times each and six opponents four times each. Or the Rangers could play their four Atlantic Division foes seven times each, and the remaining 10 teams in the conference twice each.
However, as Bettman said explicitly, he had not decided on a minimum schedule length. In a 46-game schedule, the Rangers could play their four Atlantic Division opponents four times apiece, and the remaining 10 teams three times apiece. In a 44-game schedule, the Rangers could play their four division foes six times each and the remaining 10 Eastern teams twice each.
Whatever schedule might be decided upon, the regular season must be completed by the first week of May to allow for the Stanley Cup playoffs to run a full, four-round course and finish by the end of June.
In the shortened 1995 season, the Devils swept the Detroit Red Wings in the final round and won the Cup on June 24. If the final series had gone seven games, the Cup would have been awarded June 30.
Those are the possible blueprints for 2013, but only if the league and the players union can settle the lockout.

Ganz bittere Neuigkeit für die Minnesota Timberwolves: Power Forward Kevin Love hat sich im Spiel gegen die Denver Nuggets bereits zum zweiten Mal in dieser Saison die Hand gebrochen. Damit geht auch die Verletzungsmisere der Timberwolves weiter der Star wird mehrere Wochen fehlen.
Point Guard Ricky Rubio verpasste die ersten 20 Saisonspiele, weil er sich noch von den Folgen seines Kreuzbandrisses erholen musste und fiel auch in den letzten Spielen mit Rückenproblemen aus. Brandon Roy, Malcolm Lee und Chase Budinger sind schon länger mit Knieverletzungen außer Gefecht.Small Forward Josh Howard verletzte sich nach verheißungsvollem Start so schwer am Knie, dass er die Saison aufgeben musste. Center Nikola Pekovic musste das Spielfeld bei der letzten Niederlage gegen die Portland Trail Blazers mit einer Hüftverletzung verlassen
Da wird es sehr schwer....oder besser gesagt nix mit den Playoffs....sind im Westen jetzt 9ter mit 15:15 Siegen/Niederlagen.

Dwight Howards Schulter muss untersucht werden. Kaum war das Spiel gegen die Denver Nuggets verloren, wartete auch schon die nächste Hiobsbotschaft auf die L.A.Lakers. Bei Pau Gasol gab es indes Entwarnung, er erlitt nur ein Cut und kann demnächst wieder spielen.
Na ja wenn der Howard auch wieder ausfallen sollte dann glaube ich siehts ganz schlecht aus für die Lakers...die haben inzwischen auch nur 15:18 Siege/Niederlagen was Platz 11. im Westen bedeutet.
Dirk Nowitzki macht sich Sorgen um die Zukunft der Mavericks. Einen Abschied schließt er dennoch (noch) aus - unter einer Bedingung: Dallas muss zu alter Stärke zurückfinden. Also alleine das er so denkt...ich weis nicht aber wenn da ein passendes Anbot kommt....wer weis. Könnte mir gut einen Trade vorstellen zb. Nowitzki - Gasol im Tausch

We already knew that Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III would need to undergo surgery to fix a torn LCL suffered last Sunday vs. the Seahawks. But according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, there's even worse news. That's because Griffin reportedly will have to undergo a complete reconstruction of his knee to fix a torn ACL and LCL.
Mortensen writes that the recovery projection is 6-8 months, meaning Griffin likely will miss all of OTAs and mini-camp and that his recovery could bleed into next training camp or perhaps into the early part of 2013. Mortensen's sources, though, believe Griffin will be ready by the 2013 season opener.
Dr. James Andrews -- who, as you'll recall, was nervous with Griffin playing after he sprained his LCL last month -- will perform at the surgery at about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Mortensen writes that already the diagnosis has been made that the ACL graft from Griffin's 2009 surgery has "a complete tear."
