Aufstellung Ob ein Michael Owen jetzt der Heilsbringér im Sturm sein wird wage ich mal zu bezweifeln...
David Beckham and
Michael Owen return to international action for the first time since the World Cup as England take on Brazil in a mouth-watering friendly international.
There will be a glittering array of superstars on show as Beckham, Owen, Steven Gerrard and John Terry lock horns with Ronaldinho, Kaka and the rest of the Samba Boys.
But they are all set to upstaged by Wembley stadium, which hosts its first England international since the defeat to Germany almost seven years ago.
That match marked the end of Kevin Keegan's reign as England manager, and current boss Steve McClaren is sure to be anxious after a run of poor results.
McClaren will have one eye firmly fixed on next Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia, but will know that victory over Brazil would relieve the pressure on him enormously.
Until the unimpressive 3-0 victory over Andorra in March, England had gone five games without a win and were badly struggling in front of goal.
McClaren will be thankful that Owen has recovered fully from the serious knee injury he suffered at the World Cup, even though the Newcastle striker has yet to find the net since his comeback.
Unlike Owen, Beckham has not been injured all season, but he has also had to wait patiently for a recall and his sparkling displays for Real Madrid have finally forced him back into McClaren's thinking
With Owen and Beckham returning the evolution of McClaren's England side appears to have come full circle, with
Joe Cole also back in a midfield almost identical to that which Sven Goran Eriksson settled on last summer.
The only difference is that
Ledley King is set to come in as a defensive shield for the back four, another plan introduced by Eriksson.
Owen will play as a lone striker and McClaren will hope to see
Gerrard and
Frank Lampard, given another chance to form a successful partnership in the centre, support him as much as possible.
Reading's
Nicky Shorey will make his debut at left-back and will line up alongside
Terry, Jamie Carragher and
Wes Brown in defence, with
Paul Robinson in goal.
Brazil are gearing up for the Copa America this summer and will hope for a better outcome than their last game in England, when they lost 2-0 to Portugal at Emirates Stadium.
They have bounced back with victories over Chile and Ghana since, and are expected to employ a typically attacking formation.
Ronaldinho and Kaka will be given the license to thrill behind a front two of Robinho and CSKA Moscow striker Vagner Love, while Gilberto is set to figure in midfield.
Brazilian coach Dunga has expressed concerns about the state of the Wembley pitch, but Ronaldinho at least is looking forward to setting foot on the famous turf.
He said: "It is such a motivation to play here.
"I am very happy to be here with the Brazil national team to play against England."
