Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland will cost the bookmakers £100,000 tomorrow night if he features in England's friendly match with Croatia at Portman Road, thanks to a bet placed by his father when the under-21 international was eleven.
Kirkland's Dad, Eddie, placed a £100 on a 100-1 bet that his son would one day play for England, and he managed to get nine of his friends to do the same.
On Sunday night, Kirkland was named in Sven Goran Eriksson's squad for the friendly and is likely to make his debut for the England senior side tomorrow night.
Kirkland said: "My dad has always had great faith in my ability, even when I was a kid. When I was just 10 or 11, he staked a bet with one of the bookmakers that I would one day play for England. He always thought I would and he got a price of about 100-1."
"He and nine of his friends put a bet on and it means that they stand to win a lot of money if I play. I really hope I can play and fulfil his faith in me. That would be great for both of us. I'm sure he'll be celebrating madly if I do play."
The England place is up for grabs at the moment and I would really like to cement that place one day," he added. "But first and foremost I want to be playing for Liverpool. England comes after that in my thoughts."
"Everyone knows what a great goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek is and I know it's going to be hard to break into the team, but I'll continue to do my best and see what happens."
