    Austrian Football League 2015

Vienna Vikings - Swarco Raiders Tirol
    Tomorrow, 15:00
Am. Football - <small>AFL</small> Pick: Vienna Vikings Result: Pending
    Stake: 4/10 Odds: 2.2

Vienna has lost it's main sponsor Raiffeisen during the offseason. They had a gap of about 300.000,- first but they closed that gap with a quantity of small sponsors. They have lost 10 important players during the offseason including the austrian national quarterback chris gross. but the 20 year old replacement alexander thury already replaced him for about 2.5 games last season as gross was injured and he did very well. the vikings will be without an import this season but this shouldn't be much of a factor in the austrian football league as their is only 1 import allowed to be dressed per game. the vikings have the best youth football program in all of europe and they will have a lot of new youngsters to play this season, but so do the raiders. the raiders have 5 us imports, but only qb sheldon will play tomorrow. their organisation has founded a new competition for this season, the battle of tirol where they can play all their imports, due to the fact that the austrian football league isn't in much of an interest for them in the regular season (4 of 5 teams qualify for the playoffs). head coach suan fatah said in a local newspaper that the afl is unattractive. furthermore he said that he is unsatisfied with the practice facility as they have to practice on a handball field during the offseason. he regards to the youth programm of the vikings and says that they have a big advantage because they can practice 12 months a year on a very professional basis. also the raiders have lost some key players in the offseason, including rb andreas hofbauer who may have been the best player in the league over the last few years. the raiders will have a lot of young players to start their 1st game tomorrow, too and i am not sure they will be ready for it.

both teams will have a lot of freshman to start tomorrow, but because of the youth facility program the vikings should have a big advantage to start the season. the raiders only have won once since the austrian bowl 2011 against the vikings. last year they won at home 22-20 in a game where vienna was without their starting qb, starting left tackle, best wide receiver and an not at full strength us import running back.

the bookies are overrating the fact that the vikings have lost the main sponsor and that they will play without an import. they have the better squad in the afl where only 1 import is allowed to play. they were at 1.2 odds last year as both teams met in the 1st game of the regular season, too which they won easily 41-14. i don't see any reason that they should be an underdog at home.

interwetten has it at 2.75, betathome and gwbet at 2.1.

</td></tr></tbody></table>I'm surprised about the odds as the statistics over the last years indicate a strong trend towards not so many field goals per game in the austrian football league.
In 2012 there were 19 field goals in 33 games.

In 2013 23 field goals in 33 games.

In 2014 25 field goals in 23 games, 11 of these by the austrian national kicker of the vienna vikings. So it's are 14 in 23 games by the others.

The Danube Dragons had 2 field goals in 9 games last year. The Swarco Raiders had 4 field goals in 10 games in the afl.

Also, the Raiders already played in the opener two weeks ago. They passed on a 33 yard field goal attempt early in the 2nd quarter down 0-6 on a 4th and 6 instead of kicking the field goal.

As you can see, there are only about .6 to .8 field goals made per game in the austrian football league over the past few years and teams rather go on 4th downs than kicking the field goal. Actually, there were only five games in the past three seasons with more than 3 field goals (89 games).

      edit.

prague had a superior offense last season, scoring 33.1 ppg in nine games. they return the austrian football mvp qb kyle newhall-caballero and his favorite target jan dundacek along with others. they have lost their hc who took on a div 3 school in the ncaa. their new head coach jim ward said that he wants to improve the defense as he is a defensive minded coach. he is very confident in his offense but wants to strengthen up the defense which was last in scoring defense last season. however, they lost some key pieces, and it should take a little bit of time to get the defense to the point that they can be a championship caliber team. vienna goes on the road for the 1st time this season, and it is the first road game for a lot of young players of the vikings. they looked very good on offense against tirol in game 1, gaining 469 total yards. but i also saw some things on defense that weren't all that good. they forced turnovers, but they also gave up over 200 yards and 21 points in the 2nd half to a raiders team that looked awful in the 1st half with the new qb not able to complete passes (according to a source he looked not very well in that game). i think that the panthers offense is a bit better to this point than the raiders offense as they have their two best weapons back, but vienna scored 27, 34 and 41 on them last season. even with a young offense vienna should be able to score in this range again. new vikings qb alex thury already played last season against prague in a 34-31 win including a 17-0 4th quarter comeback. i rate both offenses better than their respective #d's, and 46.5 is a very low line in the afl. prague @ 8 has some value, too.

it is the fourth game in eight days for tirol as they played on b2b weekends in the battle4tirol and afl. they won both international games easily, but lost last weekend at danube quite well by a margin of 19. they rested a lot of significant players and playing a lot of young players that never played for the 1st team before. they should gain some experience on the highest level according to hc suan fatah, and it was their plan to see what they are capable off. also, kyle callahan played under center instead of regular starter sean shelton. whatsoever, they are now 0-2 in the season and now face the weakest team in the league in my eyes at home. i read that they take the home games way more seriously than the road games, and i expect them to come out at full strength today. they played dusseldorf yesterday in a 42-0 rout, taking out a lot of players early in the game to rest them for today and the upcoming big6 game at paris. they will be without clemand erlsbacher though, who took a big hit last weekend against stuttgart and is out indefinitely. he may be the best national player on the skill positions for the raiders and they could miss him a bit. qb sean shelton, who now has played three games under center, looked way more sound yesterday than in his first few games. he plays on another level than graz giants qb chris gubisch, who had a horrible rookie season. he completed 40.1 percent of his passes and threw a league high 14 interceptions. graz now has a whole new coaching staff, including new hc bennett who is a former quarterbacks coach and college coach of former nfl qb kyle orton. graz played a lot of spread option last year, but i think they will change that a bit to rely more on gubisch. they return most of last years team and have game tape of the raiders this season, which is an advantage for them. but i just don't know if gubisch has the tools to be a successful qb. i watched some tape of last years game between these two teams in innsbruck, and gubisch was only capable of running himself or throwing checkdown passes. other than that, he looked terrible. in the 7th game of the season, he was not on the same page with his receivers. he threw some passes ob, overthrew his receivers, was not on the same page on a lot of vertical routes, threw a lot into traffic without protecing his receivers who took big hits. i think that bennett is a good coach, but relying on a 20 year old kid to win games in a very talented qb league after that horrible rookie season? tirol has way more talent then graz, and usually they should be 1.05 favorites here as they were last week at danube dragions. tirol's strength is the defensive line which minimizes graz solid rb sanz and the ability of gubisch running himself, forcing gubisch to beat them thru the air. i think you that that if you make him beating you thru the air. tirol has won 10 straight against graz and they have never lost previously in wattens. they may be a bit tired, but they should be capable off winning at home against the worst team in the league. i play it with moderate stakes as i don't know how difficult it is to play b2b games in b2b weekends.

gwbet opened on monday at 1.5 odds for the vikings and i was shocked. i waited for admiral and hoped for similar odds, but unfortunately they opened themselves at 1.3 a day later and gwbet was down to 1.35 (1.25 as of late). still i can't explain why these odds are that high. yes, i'm talkin about 1.3 odds.
danube opened at home two weeks ago at q8 against tirol (1.05). they won 43-24, but the lone reason for that was that tirol played with a b squad. because 4 of 5 teams qualify for the postseason and tirol obviously is talentwise at the top, they took their chances early in the season to give a lot of young players a chance to play at the highest national competition. remember that the raiders had to play 4 games in 9 days, so there is no reason to overvalue the dragons opening game win. before that game two weeks ago, the danube dragons have lost 17 straight games against the top 2 austrian teams vienna vikings and swarco raiders tirol. they have the most inexperienced offense in the league and you could see that in the national demanded game a few weeks back. there is no thomas haider anymore, maybe the best all around austrian athlete in recent years. they only have rookies at the wide receiver position, the offensive line is very young, too. the lone player that is capable of doing some consistent damage is qb alex good who i think is one of the best qbs in european leagues. but he can't win games by himself, and i doubt that they will have any chance in the "blue river bowl" (vikings vs dragons is a local vienna derby) on sunday against the toughest defense they will face all season. you see, they won in game one against tirol 43-24, but they didn't looked well on offense. tirol turned the ball over 2 times and they bootched a punt, giving danube very good field position three times plus the average punt of tirol went just above 22 yards which is incredible bad. danube rushed 35 times for 166 yards against a raiders defense that allowed 137 against the vikings and 168 yards against graz respectively on the ground. danube was able to run against a weak run defense, but they weren't able to produce through the air. yes, they have a good qb. but they have only rookies on wr and they just weren't able to win match ups and hold on to the football. good went 18-38 for 163 yards and 3 tds, which looks not that bad, but i can't trust this offense against an actual defense that just doesn't allow you to run the ball and make you beat them thru the air. the vienna has allowed 1.68 yards per run in two games (49 yards in 24 attempts), and their big defensive line should beat up a dragons offensive line that plays three rookies. danube won't be able to run the ball effectively, but they just don't have the weapons at receiver to be effecitve with the pass either. the vikings already have played the best two teams in the league, going 2-0 with two close wins against tirol and at prague. if you take out the defeat last year at home against graz which was played under abysmal weather conditions (vikings also were without their best three offensive players), they are undefeated for 25 straight home games in the afl dating back to may 2009. they have the best pure football program in austria, and they should be able to handle a very inexperienced dragons squad quiet easily. the 1.3 for them is only due the dragons win as 21.5 home dog against tirol a few weeks back. i haven't seen that high odds for vienna (take out tirol) at home against afl competition since i entered that league four years ago, and i doubt that they will be at such odds again against poor competition.

                            gwbet 2.8, admiral 2.5.
