BBL
Alba Berlin:
Capacity: 8861
This team disappointed last year, for the new season many things changed. The management wasnt satisfy with the performance last year (eliminated by Artland Dragons – underdog – in the quarter final) and dont roll over the contract with coach Rödl. Alba has a high budget and therefore big pressure for the new season. Aim could only be 1th oder 2nd after Play-Offs.
Advantage:
For the new season they signed Pavicevic: a coach with many experiences and one of the best in europe. The management said that he has the same philosophy, that Alba has. Pavicevic internalize the Yugoslavia-Basketball philosophy. (Alba had in the 90`s many success, with this kind of basketball). If he can handle and form the team, they reach their aim.
Alba signs 10 new players (Jeretin, Dojcin, Subotic, Nikolic, Femerling, Thompson, Brown)…) which suit to Pavicevic`s system. Alba has with Bamberg the highest quality in the league.
Disadvantages:
Big blow for Alba ist the injury of Jeretin (cruciate ligament crack). He should be the leader of the team and the injury is a big shock for the team. If they cant sign a player with equal quality, they get some trouble.
They play the Championship and Uleb-Cup. (Double Burden) and they have much pressure because Alba is 4 years without the championship title.
Ranking: 5-/5(4 incl. inury of Jeretin and without substitute)
After regular Season: 1-2. I rate them a bit better than last year, but atm i have doubts with the injury of Jeretin. The management search for a new PG, but without success atm. But Alba still has some time. In last preaseason games, Pavicevic played only eight rotation and Brown (PG-Backup for Jeretin) couldnt convinced yet. Unpredictable at the moment.
Brose Baskets Bamberg:
Capacity: 6900
Bamberg is the titleholder. They had a hard fight in the finals, but they have merited the title.
They go in the new season with coach Bauermann (since 2001) and the aim is to defend the title. Bamberg is known for his tight defense. They have the best in the league. There is nothing extra-ordinary to refer, because this club is consistent. They have imo the surround to win again the title.
Advantages:
Coach Bauermann is imo on of the best coaches. He won 9 times the German championship.
They have a well-rehearsed team and got only 5 new players to start into the new season.
(Greene, Suput, Okulaja, Schenscher, Dickel) Greene, Okulaja, Hamann played S5 at the European Championschips this year.
They have a good mix of young, talented and some older experienced players.
Showpiece is the Defense. Every of us know the slogan…offensive win games, defense…
Homeground- everybody call Bamberg –freaky city- freaky fans. With max. 6900 spectator, the hottest homeground in Germany.
Disadvantages:
They could get some trouble in the offensive, because they lost best offensive player Jacobsen (Grizzlies).
Bamberg plays in the Euroleague (Double Burden)
Ranking: 4-5/5
After regular season: 1-2. I rate them on the same level like Alba. Only small things will make the difference. Normal one of them should win the title. Problem could be, if they can handle Championschip and Euroleague. Currently the preperation was not good. (Okulaja is ill, Hamann a bit tired)
EWE Baskets Oldenburg:
Capacity: 3148
They missed last year Play-Offs. Problem was, that they cant arrange claim with reality. Time to change many things. New coach, new concept and 10 new players. I expect much from them this year. Main problem was coach Beck in the last years. They signed Krunic. A coach with good knowledge about the european basketball. They have a mix of american players and players from the Balkan. Krunic is also a fan of the Yugoslavia-philosophy (like Pavicevic). The most important player is Jason Gardner (Playmaker from Baskets Bonn, l.y. BBL-Allstar). Around him they get some players, which played in some good european teams. McClintock – Nancy. Perkovic – Athen. Paulding – Gravelines. Also some serbian and croatian players who suits excellent to the concept of Krunic.
Advantages:
Coach Krunic
One of the best playmakers Gardner.
Atmosphere of departure.
Teamwork is one of the main attitude of Krunic.
Disadvantages:
The problem will be if Krunic can add the 10 players to his system, in the beginning of the season.
Ranking: 4 (with positive trend)
After regual season: If Krunic get the system in the heads of the player early in the season, than i expect something about 3-5. But i wouldnt wonder if they surpirse, they had a good preperation.
Telekom Baskets Bonn:
Capacity: 3500
They finished on position 6 after regular season last year. They are one of the better teams in the league, but they lost BBL-Allstar and Playmaker Gardner. They got 5 new player and substitute Gardner with Davis (Czarni Slupsk). Burrell, Strasser (Backup for Davis) from Cologne, Frazier and Diagne are also new. Insider would rate them a few weeks ago a bit better than last year, because they got not only equal players, but rather better players. But a few weeks later, there developed some problems, Davis played bad in the preparation games and coach Koch is disappointed. Davis plays good defense, but in the offensive hes weaker than Gardner. They have similar style, like Bamberg. They act about a good defense and want to make easy points about Transition.
They want to sign perhaps a new Playmaker.
In spring next year, Bonn get a new Arena.
Advantages:
They have a very good defense.
Bonn only step up punctual with some new players.
Disadvantages:
At the moment they cant equalize the loss of Gardner.
In the preparation games, they got often foul trouble.
Ranking: 4-/5
Place after reg. Season: If they get Davis in form something between 3-5, if not 6-8.
Artland Dragons:
Capacity: 3000
Artland (8th after regualr season) finished surprisingly on the second place, after they eliminated Alba and Cologne in the Play-offs. They had a very good team, but many injuries in the season. For the new season they lost many good players. Playmaker and the dominating man in the Play-offs Rivera, Prewitt and Hess left the club – They played all S5. Also Bailey, Badiane and Caner-Medley left the club.
But no time to mourn. Goldsberry (last year, most steals, and 5th most assists, playmaker in Leverkusen), Chubb (important player in Bremerhaven) Thomas and Mädrich signed at Artland. Melzer should have also a important role in the team but he got an injury. Artland get already some good substitute- Freije – A player with good qualitiy and NBA experience (Power Forward)
McIntosh (Guard) and Center Hall were already last year very important cornerstones in the concept of coach Fleming. All in all Quakenbrück has some got substitues, i think on the level like last year.
Advantages:
Homeadvantage – The arena is called the hell of Quakenbrück. There are max. only 3000 spectators, but the arena is small and the fans make really much noise. They finished at home with 16-6 (incl. Play-Offs- 2 loss at home vs Bamberg) on second place.
Teamwork – Coach Fleming act about teamwork.
Disadvantages:
They lost 3 S5 players and have a low budget.
Other teams know immediately the strength of Artland and would not underrate them this year.
Double Burden: It will be hard for them to manage 2 competitions
Ranking: 4-/5
Place after reg. Season: They reach the play-offs. 5-8 But i believe they cant surprise in the Play-offs like last year, because other teams respect and dont underestiamte them.
ENBW Ludwigsburg:
Capacity: 6300
They finished on 3 after regular season. They hadnt any chances againgst Bamberg in the Play-offs. MVP, Coach of the year, and Newcomer of the year are the titles from the last year.
Green and Foster (MVP and Newc. of the Year) left the club. Two big losses. But 5 new players from the USA and several young germans got a contract. They are all young and hungry. Its questionable, if Ludwigsburg can repeat the success from the last year, because they were absolutley an maverick last year, but Poropat has the right touch to do the right things at the transfer market and i believe we will see a team with equal quality like last year.
Poropat likes to play offensive basketball, they have problems with teams like Bamberg and Bonn who playes a very tough and tight defensive style. I know its only preperation but several german teams played against Dinamo Moskau (Ludwigsburg lost with 2, Frankfurt and Bamberg with over 20, Alba with 15) and if i interpret correct, we will see a strong Southern German Team. Ludwigsburg played also well in other preperation games.
Currently two S5`s have an injury (Harris – will be back at the end of 2007 and Young is doubtful for the first season game). Bennett ist the new substitute for Harris and played well in the preseason.
Advantages:
They have a superior team and a very talented coach.
They are very flexibel in the offensive and have many options.
Disadvantages:
No doubt the new young players have much quality, but its not sure if they feel well, so far away frome home.
Ranking: 4 (with light positive tendency after preseason)/5
Place after 34 reg. Season: I believe, they reach the play-offs – something around place 5.
Cologne 99ers:
Capacity: 3200
Finished on 4 after regular season.
Last years name was Rhein Energy Cologne. The sponsor Rheinenergy cancelled the deal and they have lower budget than last year. Many players left the club. (Burrell, Strasser, Gortat –Magics, Green – Heat, Mallet...)
Important players from last year are Nadejfeji (he left first also the club, because they cant pay him his salary-wishes, but in the beginning September he send a signal that he is ready to play for cologne with a less attractice contract than last years) and McElroy (Best defense player).
They have 8 new players, very young talented, but without experience. Nadjefji and McElroy are the cornerstones, and they build a team around them. Only Nadjefji is from the age-group 76`s. McElroy is from 80`s. All others are 82 or younger.
Advantages:
They have many talented players. They are hot to show their potential and i think Cologne have a dangerous mix with two experienced players and younger players.
Disadvantages:
It could be a problem to integrate the players and i think they get problems in important or tight games this year.
Ranking: 3-4 (with light negative tendency after preseason)/15
Place after reg. Season: Play-Offs are possible, but it will be a hard fight; 6-9. But in the play offs they get problems against experienced teams like Bamberg or Alba. Im sure that we will see the one or other surprise from Cologne. Cologne could not convince me in the preseason.
Eisbären Bremerhaven:
Capacity: 10069
5th after regular season. They lost few players, who showed a good performance last season.
These players are to expensive for Bremerhaven and they have to sign new.
Bremerhaven is a physical strength team, which promoted two years again and surprised last two seasons, but this time is gone.
They got some good new players like Guard Brown and Doornekamp and Adams from Trier.
They cancel the deal with last years PG Jones, because in tight matches he couldnt control the team. Substitute Young who should play Center (Starting Five), got an injury in the preparation. Only one good player for the big positions (4,5) is Doornekamp. 25th September Bremerhaven signs Danelius (4- Power Forward) who played already last year for Bremerhaven, but he played a bad season last year and had a injury. Bremerhaven with ups and downs in the preperation.
Advantages:
Coach Sakalauskas has perhaps the biggest percentage from the success of Bremerhaven in the last years. He grow from year to year, and was 3 of 4 summers in Dallas, in the summer league to get more knowledge.
The surround is one of the better in the league, the management trust Sakalauskas and he can do his job in peace.
Bremerhaven plays by comparison with other top teams (Bamberg, Cologne, Alba, Ludwigsburg, Artland, Frankfurt) only the Championschip.
Disadvantages:
The big positions - Power Forward and Center - are clearly undermanned. If Danelius is a good substitute, who knows, we have to wait.
Ranking: 4-/5
Place after reg. Season: They`ll reach play offs, something around 6, but i think they cant surpirse and fight for the title. Maximum Semifinal Play-Offs.
Deutsche Bank Skyliners:
Capacity: 5002
From 1999 the club grows and grows, but last two seasons were a disaster. Many injuries over the two years, and the false staffing policy. 2005 they avoid at the last matchday the relegation and last years position 13. Deutsche Bank is the biggest bank in Germany.
They roll-up the team and make some important decisions. In the middle of the last season, they make a deal with coach Murat Didin and for this season they signed Pascal Roller (one of the better PG in the league, he knows Frankfurt because he played earlier in Frankfurt) , Archibong (important player from Alba) and last years topscorer Derrick Allen from Leverkusen. They get also Evtimov (have an eye on him - from Bologna, Shtein (Ulm) and Zöllner (Athen)
The team has very good perspective, but Evtimov and McKinney got an injury. McKinney could play probable in the new year. Evtimov will be fit for the first season game. But Frankfurt have to do the preperation without them and this is a big blow.
Advantages:
They have a very good team, which work very well together in the first prepeartion games.
Allen, Archibong and Evtimov in the offensive build an weirdly explosiv and flexible trio.
Disadvantages:
They need a Center. Zöllner and Shtein are good backups, but nothing more. Skyliners want to act but atm without success.
Injury of McKinney hurts, they have some good but not equal replacements (Hunt and de Mello)
Double Burden in the Uleb-Cup
Evtimov got also an injury and will be probably be fit for the first season game, in the preperation games without him, you saw, that Frankfurt got some problems.
Ranking: 3+/5
Place after reg. Season: 6-9 with some surprises i think, maybe one or two places better )i have doubts atm, because squad is not depth).
In a short summary, i have to say that we have two teams, that are the favorits on the title. They are a above the other teams, but then we have ca 6-7 teams, that are more or less equal and its very hard to predict
For the other 9 clubs, i wrote only a summary for each club, because this are only midclass or the weakest teams and there isnt much to say about advantages or disadvantages.
Walter Tigers Tübingen:
Capacity: 3132
The club has one of the lowest budget in this league. They have only five new players and kept the important players from the last season. This is something new in Tübingen, because in the years before, they act like the other teams who changed nearley the whole team.
They finished last year after reg. Season on 10. I think we can expect them from 8-10. They were last year to inconsistent to reach the play-offs, but if Mc Carthy can change his team in a solid troup and with a bit luck, possible is perhaps the 8th place.
Tübingen has only 11 players in the squad, over the long season this could be a problem, if Tübingen get injury problems. Tübingen with a good S5, but in the rotation they have substance-loss.
Ranking: 3/5
After reg. Season: 8-10
New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig:
Capacity: 6600
Braunschweig finished on 14th place last year. Disappointing for the management.
Ex-Braunschweig player Braun is the new sportsdirector with coach Mutapic they roll-over the team. They have 1 million Team-Budget. The team exist only with german and american players. Problem was last year the playmakerposition, they buy PG Jones from Karlsruhe (get relegated). Braunschweig signed 8 new players (from colleges and some from german clubs –Jena, Karlsruhe, Ulm), overall 14 players.
The oldest player is 26 and i believe they have potential, but i cant see them in the Play-offs, because other clubs has by far better players and more experience. Braunschweig is on a good way, but it needs time. One step forward for them, something around 10
Ranking: 3
Place after reg. Season: 9-11
Bayer Giants Leverkusen:
Capacity: 3148
Sad but true. After many decades Bayer cancel the deal with Leverkusen after this season.
But you can feel alreday the impact of the sponsoring-losing this year.
Leverkusen lost many important players (Allen, Bailey, Goldsberry, Woudstra left the club). Leverkusen and coach Kuzcmann couldnt compensate the loss of this players. New players are Winters (Nantes), Brempong, Whiting, Spöler T., Spöler B. (Spölers own youth)
Last year Giants fight for the last Play-off spot, this year the Giants are nobodys.
Important for Leverkusen is that they could kept a frame of good players. Geib, Fox, Taylor.
Leverkusen has no clear Center. Spölers and Fox are Forward/Center. It could be probably that they get problems under the baskets, because Spölers are 19 (some potential – but no well talented players). Overall they have only 11 players.
Ranking: 2+/5
Place after reg. Season: Normally they wouldnt get relegated, i think something around 11-15, but if they loose many games in the beginnning of the season and Taylor, Fox or Geib leave this club for example, than it could be a hard season, for the club with the most german championships.
TBB Trier:
Capacity: 5200
Trier plays since 1990 in the BBL. Last year they finished on 15th. One reason, why Trier finished on this place, was that they d change 4 times the Point Guard, other reason was the engagement of some players (no enthuasiam and fighting spirit). Only 3 players remain from the last season, Trier got 8 new players. Important losings are Adams, Doornekamp (both Bremerhaven) and Brandon Gay (Antwerpen). Bad News: Starting PG Taylor got an toeinjury. Trier engaged Coleman from a swedish club, where he averaged 27 ppg and 6 rpg, he has a contract for two months.
I expect some fresh “young gun” basketball, but for upper tasks, i think they will failure.
Jackson ist the oldest with 28 years, some of them are 26, but the rest of the squad is younger.
Its hard to judge about the quailty, because the arrived players are mainly from the college or unknown teams.
Ranking: 3-/5
Place after reg. Season: 10-13 - I rate TBB as a mid class team and i think there are much other teams, who are stronger and more experienced than Trier. They wont reach a Play-off spot.
Paderborn Paskets:
Capacity: 12300
Paderborn finished on a spectacular 11th place as a newcomer full of euphoria. It could be a typical second year for a newcomer. Now its everyday life, nothing new. 7 players remain, Paderborn engaged 8. Coach Spradley had in the summer a flirt witch Oldenburg, but he couldnt cancel the contract with Paderborn. He sais, he will work with full power, but who knows?! With Gippson, Collins, Golson und Patton important players left the club, but if we can trust eye witnesses, they could compensate the losings and engaged equal players. Imo the BBL is better, than in the last years. Stars like Roller, Okulaja, Femerling remains, Alba got Pavicevic, Jeretin and so on. Coach Spradley confirm my opinion and said the BBL increase their level and so i believe they couldnt repeat their success from the last year.
Immediatley Paderborn have to terminate two agreements. Harbut (Paderborn had some hope in this man) and one center Washington or Jenkins have to leave the club. In the squad are only players from Germany and the USA. Moore, Edwin, Peavy (all new) convinced in the game before last vs Telekom Baskets Bonn (69:67).
Ranking: 2/5
Place after reg. Season: 12-15 should be doable for the Westphalians.
Ratiopharm Ulm:
Capacity: 3000
12th last year. Also a newcomer last season, like Paderborn. This club has one of the lowest budgets in the league. Ca 1.3 Millionen for 20007/2008. With Levy (Braunschweig) Shtein (Frankfurt), two columns left the club, but Ulm kept good players (Lucas, Gibbs, Erege, Wysocki). They recommit 5 players for the new season. Mentionable is guard Bailey (Göttingen) who substitute Levy. Göttingen is known for his “Guardterror”. Göttingen convinced in the “Junge Liga” with very, aggressive and flexible Guards. Finn (2,12 -Beykoz) should boost Ulms force under the basket. Ratiopharms player are in the average smaller than the player of other teams. Heide, Betz, Joyce are very young, but talented players.
Ranking: 2/5
Place after reg. Season: 13-16 should be realistic Swabians. Ratiopharms target: To avoid the relegation. It will be a hard second year with this low budget, i expect some pressure from newcomer Göttingen.
Giessen 46ers:
Capacity: 4003
49ers faught two years against the relegation with success (l.y. 16th). I have to laugh a bit because coach Leibenatz said, Giessen want to secure early in the season a place in the midfield of the ladder, over then to fight for a Play-off spot. Giessen want to promote young players with talent. There is seldom money for a player with excellent skills and experience.
Coach Leibenath (32) made early his way as a (co)-trainer (since 1998), last year he coached a 2nd league club in Great Britain and Giessen is his 2nd station as a head coach. But i guess, he is one the coachs with lower quality in the league. Important Guard Trotter got an injury and wont be back until November. Roessler, Buljevic (Guard/Forward 20 years and a very good talent) , Hartenstein and Terdenge remain in Gießen. Walker and Nelson are probable starter. Trotter is substituted by Sparks (Benfica Lissabon)
I have to admit that the preperation for Gießen was very bad.
Preperation games:
25.08 Frankfurt Skyliners – Giessen 79:63
22.09 Giessen – Leverkusen 66:59
23.09 Giessen – Artland 70:77
27.09 Giessen – Jena 74:92
Further losses against Bamberg, Leuven, Mons – One win against Den Helder.
Roessler Topscorer againgst Jena said in an interview, that Giessen could lose some games, but not in this kind. They had no fighting-spirit and no passion.
Ranking: 2-/5
Place after reg. Season: 14-17 This will be the next hard season for my future hometown. I absolute disagree with the opinion of Leibenath.
BG 74 Göttingen:
Capacity: 3328
Im happy since a few days to write about this team. Göttingens balance last year 28-2 (Winner of “Junge Liga” North”).
Two losses away from home. BG 74 has 1.4 million Budget. You cant expect any miracle from them, but im sure we will see surprises. The “Veilchen” is a club full of tradition. Göttingen had in the 80`s are very succesful period and than many bad years. After promotion for this season, the whole city is full of euphoria and confidence. They want to play fresh, brave and aggressive basketball. Göttingen represent a new kind of basketball in Germany.
Guard Terror – in this squad are 7 Guards. Two clean Center, two clean Forwards (but most of them are flexible). We can expect anytime in a game 3 or 4 Guards.
On the whole, 7 players (4 of them are starters) remain in Göttingen, only Bailey (Ulm and MVP) is an important loss.
With Kirkley, Grimaldi and Schröder 3 cornerstones prolongs the contract. Kirkley is the brain of coach Patricks system. Grimaldi another important component of the Guardterror. Patrick has good contacts in the United States and so BG 74 could engage 6 players with USA-nationality. Bailey is substituted by Brooks (Perth). Patrick said that he is a absolut bomb. A type like Bailey. Coach Patrick knows his system perfect. I guess they get problems under the basket. Schröder (Center) got an injury and played no preperation game. Hanson could not achieve the expectations. Göttingen won a preperation game againgst Jena (also promoted) with 75:55
Ranking: 2-/5
After reg. Season: 13-17 Huh, of course they fight against the relegation, but as a promoted club they have no pressure (like Ulm, Paderborn l.y.) and i hope i could back them sometimes. Problem could be that they have 4 away games in the first 5 games, because they centre is reserved for some other arrangements.
Science City Jena:
Capacity: 3000
Last but not least, Jena promoted as 1st in “Junge Liga “Süd”. Last years target was, to reach a place under the first four. It was a big surprise that Jena promoted. In Jena the clocks ticking a little bit differently. I begin with the coach Harmsen. He is 25 years old and the youngest coach ever in the BBL history. I respect him, because he made a good job last year, but i guess he and his team are weaker than all ohter teams. Also weaker than Göttingen. Most of the players remain in Jena and 4 players sign on in Jena. With Granz (Braunschweig) on of the better players left Jena.
Basit (from Oldenburg) is a Center with some BBL experience, but in Oldenburg he hadnt much playing-time. Moss, Shelton, Reinhardt are totally unknown. If i compare a little bit the teams of Jena and Göttingen, than i think i could say, Göttingen has by far the better team. There is more quality in Göttingens team (as a result of Patricks connections and management). But i dont want to disgress, i also have to say that Jena had a lot trouble in the summer, before they could enjoy the “dream of the BBL”. They had to achieve some conditions. The clubs hall dont respond to the BBL-Standards. They had a few options, but then they decided to construct a “tent” for 3000 spectators. Jena had to adhere to a time limit (need sponsors). With success, but you can see there are different problems, and there is all in all no more money, to step up with some new high-quality players.
Ranking: 1+/5
After reg. Season: 16-18 Science City, is imo the weakest team, with a unexperienced coach. They are the biggest candidate to get relegated. If we can see some surprises, then in the beginning of the season, and if they want to secure a place in the league, they can reach it only with euphoria, fighting spirit, will and moral.

BBL:
Artland Dragons - Alba Berlin Do. 20:15
Morgen fängt die neue BBL-Saison an. Interessante Wiederauflage - Duell aus den Play-Offs letztes Jahr. Dort demontierte Artland Alba 3:0.
Artland Dragons +5,5 betathome 3/10 1,85
Artland Sieg 2,50 PaddyPower 1/10
Saisonbeginn deswegen vorsichtig, sowie Alba darf nie unterschätzt werden, alles in allem 50-50 Spiel, eventuell minimale Vorteile Alba.Kommentar

Erstmal Respekt für die Saisonvorschau, gute Arbeit
Meine Tipps fürs Wochenende:
Bamberg - Oldenburg:

so what...
