"Injuries plague Metros' defense
By MICHAEL LEWIS
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
The already crippled MetroStars defense took another major hit yesterday when veteran central defender Steve Jolley was sidelined two months with a hip injury.
Jolley, diagnosed with a second-degree right hip flexor strain suffered at the end of Wednesday's practice, joins Eddie Pope on the sidelines. Pope fractured his left kneecap on May 31 and is out for another 3-5 weeks.
Add the fact that goalkeeper Tim Howard's paperwork could come through any day now for his pending departure to Manchester United, and the MetroStars' defense is in miserable shape.
Coach Bob Bradley doesn't have many options on whom to team with Juan Forchetti, who acquitted himself well in his first start Saturday, for tomorrow's game at the Chicago Fire. Bradley said he probably will use rookie Kenny Arena, who struggled in two starts as Pope's replacement.
Asked if he considered trading for an experienced central defender, Bradley replied, "Not at the moment."
Neither was switching formations from a 4-4-2. "I don't think that is the answer," he said. "You've got to have defenders."
The MetroStars' central depth is woefully thin with veteran Joe Addo, a forgotten man who hasn't played a minute this season, and outside fullbacks Craig Ziadie and Chris Leitch, who have some - but not extensive - experience playing in the middle, Bradley said.
The Eastern-Conference leading MetroStars (6-3-2) have surrendered a league-low 10 goals (tied with D.C. United).
"I think we all recognize that the timing is poor with three big games coming up," Jolley said, referring to Chicago, San Jose on Wednesday and the July 5 match at United.
"This was hopefully a time for us to put the pieces together and get another streak together. The positive thing is that I have plenty of time to get back. I thought I had been playing pretty well. I thought I was playing some of the best soccer since I came to New York."
